About the workshop

Enjoy the learning of Pattachitra painting  "Sacred Story of Gajendra Moksha " using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra

Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Artists, called Chitrakars, use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on various surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.

Sacred Story of Gajendra MokshaThis Pattachitra painting beautifully depicts the story of Gajendra Moksham from Hindu mythology. The scene shows Lord Vishnu arriving on Garuda with Goddess Lakshmi to save Gajendra, the elephant king, from the crocodile in the lotus pond. According to the legend, Gajendra prayed to Lord Vishnu with complete devotion when he was caught by the crocodile. Moved by his sincere prayer, Lord Vishnu came swiftly to rescue him and grant liberation. The painting is created in the traditional Odisha Pattachitra style, known for its fine detailing, bold lines, and vibrant natural colors. The lotus flowers, decorative trees, and ornamental border add spiritual beauty and balance to the artwork. This painting symbolizes faith, divine protection, and the power of true devotion in times of difficulty.
