Enjoy the learning of Pattachitra painting "Nauka Vihar Radha Krishna " using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra
Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Artists, called Chitrakars, use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on various surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.
Yamuna and Krishna share their bluish dark complexion, and she is a silent witness to the rasa-vilasa of Krishna. She assists him by providing charming nikunjas or arbours and sets the scenes for many of Krishna's escapades and adventures. Bhaskar Mohapatra and soak in the beauty of divine love through this painting. In this workshop, we are going to make a scene of Nauka Vihar wherein Lord Krishna and Radha, along with Gopis, are enjoying a trip down the river Yamuna.
This Pattachitra painting illustrates a graceful Krishna Leela scene, where Lord Krishna is shown boating with the gopis, symbolizing love, devotion, and divine playfulness. Krishna is depicted in his characteristic blue form, holding a pole, while the gopis sit beside him adorned with traditional jewelry and expressive postures. The calm river, lotuses, and swans enhance the sense of serenity and spiritual harmony. Fine, rhythmic lines and intricate detailing are hallmarks of the Pattachitra style seen throughout the figures and borders. The earthy yet vibrant color palette, using natural tones, gives the painting a timeless and devotional quality.
