About the workshop
Enjoy the learning of Pattachitra painting "Ram Rajyabhisheka: The Divine Coronation in Pattachitra" using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra
Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Artists, called Chitrakars, use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on various surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.
Ram Rajyabhisheka: The Divine Coronation in Pattachitra: This exquisite Pattachitra painting depicts the grand scene of Lord Rama’s coronation (Rajyabhisheka), one of the most celebrated moments from the Ramayana. At the center, Lord Rama and Goddess Sita are shown seated on a royal throne, symbolizing righteousness and divine harmony. Rama’s calm and noble expression, along with Sita’s grace, reflects the triumph of dharma over evil. Surrounding them are Lord Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrughna, Hanuman, and other celestial beings, each rendered with intricate detailing and vibrant natural colors. The deep blue background symbolizes divinity and serenity, while the ornate architecture and floral motifs enhance the regality of the scene. The artist’s precision in gold outlines and fine brushwork exemplifies the traditional Odishan Pattachitra style. Every element—from the expressive faces to the ornamental costumes—radiates devotion, joy, and celebration. This masterpiece stands as a timeless tribute to the virtues of devotion, loyalty, and divine justice.
