About the workshop
Enjoy the learning Pattachitra painting "Vishnu Ji in Anantashayan " using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra
Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Artists, called Chitrakars, use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on various surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.
Vishnu Ji in Anantashayan: Vishnu in Anantashayan depicts the deity in a reclining posture on the cosmic serpent Shesha, signifying his rest during the period between the dissolution and creation of the universe. This iconic representation often shows Vishnu with four arms, holding his characteristic symbols: the shankha, the chakra, the gada, and the padma. Goddess Lakshmi is shown seated near his feet, and a lotus emerges from his navel, upon which Brahma, the creator, is seated. This posture symbolizes the potential for creation even in apparent repose, highlighting Vishnu's role as the preserver and the source of cosmic order. The serpent Shesha represents eternity and the cyclical nature of time
