About the Art & Workshop

Kalighat and Santhal paintings are collectively known as Bengal Pattachitra, a rich traditional and mythological art heritage of West Bengal. Bengal Pattachitra is broadly divided into several forms such as Durga Pat, Chalchitra, Tribal Pattachitra, Medinipur Pattachitra, and Kalighat Pattachitra. The subject matter of this art tradition mainly revolves around mythological narratives, religious stories, folklore, and social themes, reflecting the cultural life of Bengal.

In the nineteenth century, the most prominent school of painting in Bengal was the traditional scroll painting (Pata) practiced in rural areas. These paintings were created on cloth or paper scrolls and depicted scenes of gods, goddesses, and episodes from epics such as Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas. The artists, known as Patuas or “painters on cloth,” traveled from village to village, narrating and singing the stories illustrated in their scrolls during festivals and community gatherings.

With the establishment of British rule, Western influence began to shape Indian art practices. The British introduced European academic art training through institutions, which gradually influenced local artists. Patuas adapted new techniques and themes to suit urban audiences, leading to the emergence of Kalighat painting—a bold, expressive, and narrative-driven art form that reflected contemporary society.

Learning Objectives and Modules of the Workshop

Babu Embracing Bibi is a classic Kalighat painting that humorously depicts a Bengali babu embracing his bibi, symbolizing changing social values in 19th-century Bengal. With bold lines, flat colors, and expressive faces, the artwork reflects satire on urban life and Western influence, moving beyond mythological themes to social commentary.
