Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Chitrakars use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.
The Divine Trinity: Ganesha, Ardhanarishvara, and Harihara in Pattachitra: This elegant Pattachitra painting depicts three significant composite and divine forms from Hindu tradition—Lord Ganesha, Ardhanarishvara, and Harihara. Lord Ganesha is shown on the left as the remover of obstacles and the deity of wisdom, prosperity, and auspicious beginnings. At the center is Ardhanarishvara, the unified form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, symbolizing the perfect balance of masculine and feminine energies in the universe. On the right is Harihara, a combined form of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, representing the unity of two of Hinduism’s principal deities and the harmony of creation and preservation. Each deity stands beneath an ornate temple arch, emphasizing the sacred and devotional nature of the composition. Learn the intricate design and techniques of Pattachitra paintings along with live artist interaction. Also, learn the importance of Dasavatar, the folk stories behind the paintings, their relevance in modern times, and the peculiar features of Pattachitra painting, from base coloring to detailing.

- To develop foundational skills in Pattachitra painting techniques, including line work, color application, and composition.

Module Details
Module 1 to 5
Module 1: Apply the base colors to the temple arches, pillars, platforms, and background.
Module 2:Paint the base colors of Lord Ganesha, including the body, garments, and ornaments.
Module 3:Add detailed colors to Ganesha's crown, jewelry, and sacred attributes.
Module 4:Paint the Shiva half of Ardhanarishvara with appropriate skin tones, attire, and ornaments.
Module 5:Complete the Parvati half of Ardhanarishvara using vibrant colors and intricate decorative details.
Module 6 to 10
Module 6:Paint the base colors of Harihara, clearly distinguishing the Shiva and Vishnu aspects.
Module 7:Add colors and fine details to Harihara's garments, ornaments, and divine attributes.
Module 8: Paint the sacred animals and symbolic elements placed beneath each deity.
Module 9:Add shading and tonal variations to all three divine figures for depth and dimension.
Module 10:Decorate the garments, crowns, and jewelry with traditional Pattachitra patterns.
Module 11 to 15
Module 11: Paint the architectural details of the arches, pillars, and platforms with intricate motifs.
Module 12:Complete the floral and ornamental border using traditional Pattachitra designs.
Module 13:Add the small decorative motifs and embellishments across the black background.
Module 14:Outline the entire composition with clean, precise black lines to define every element.
Module 15:Finish the artwork with white highlights, intricate detailing, and final color corrections to achieve a refined traditional Pattachitra appearance.

Bhaskar Mohapatra, a national award-winning Pattachitra artist, comes from a long lineage of hereditary chitrakars. He carries forward the legacy of Orissa's native art form where no pencil or charcoal is used for the preliminary drawings.
