About the workshop

Enjoy the learning Pattachitra painting  "Lakshmi Narasimha: Harmony of Power and Compassion " using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra

Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Artists, called Chitrakars, use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on various surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.

Lakshmi Narasimha: Harmony of Power and CompassionThis painting beautifully captures the divine harmony embodied by Lakshmi Narasimha. Lord Narasimha, the formidable avatar of Lord Vishnu, powerfully depicted with his iconic lion face and human form, sits regally alongside his consort, Goddess Lakshmi. This union symbolizes the perfect equilibrium between potent power and serene compassion.
Narasimha, the fierce vanquisher of evil and steadfast protector of dharma, is softened by the gentle presence of Goddess Lakshmi, who graces his lap. As the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness, her loving embrace pacifies his otherwise formidable nature, presenting a tranquil aspect of this powerful deity.
The intricate detailing and traditional artistic execution strongly suggest this is a masterpiece in the Pattachitra style, a deeply revered folk art tradition hailing from Odisha. Both divine figures are resplendently adorned with elaborate ornaments and dressed in vibrant, richly patterned garments, befitting their supreme status. Garuda, the vahana of Lord Vishnu, is depicted at the bottom of the artwork in a posture of prayer and reverence.
