About the workshop

Enjoy the learning Pattachitra painting  "An Ode to Musical Expression  " using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra

Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Artists, called Chitrakars, use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on various surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.

An Ode to Musical ExpressionThis vibrant Pattachitra painting showcases a dynamic scene featuring a musician playing a wind instrument. The musician is adorned with traditional jewelry and clothing, including a patterned blue upper garment, a pink lower garment, and decorative waist and ankle bands. With bent knees and a tilted head, the musician's pose conveys a sense of engagement and passion in their performance. The surrounding decorative elements, including the stylized floral patterns and the architectural suggestion in the background, frame the central figure and enhance the overall visual harmony. The use of bold black outlines defines each element distinctly, a key characteristic of the Pattachitra style. This artwork not only showcases a musical scene but also exemplifies the unique artistic conventions and storytelling traditions embedded within Pattachitra.
